Luis Bravo’s FOREVER TANGO, the internationally celebrated entertainment event that has played to great acclaim in Europe, Canada and throughout the United States, and most recently enjoyed its third run on Broadway.

Sensuous and sophisticated, the tango inhabits a world where everything can be said with the flick of a leg, the tug of a hand, the tap of a foot and the arch of an eyebrow.  Created and directed by Luis Bravo, FOREVER TANGO was voted Best Touring Musical by Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle in San Francisco where it played an unprecedented 92 weeks at the Theatre on the Square and has returned season after season.  Truly an international event, FOREVER TANGO was also awarded the coveted Simpatia Prize at the 1996 Spoleto Festival in Italy.

FOREVER TANGO features fourteen world-class tango dancers, one vocalist and an on-stage eleven piece orchestra, including the instrument of the tango, the bandoneon, in an evening that celebrates the passionate music and dance of Argentina.  The dances, performed to original and traditional music, are the result of collaboration between each couple and director/creator Bravo.  “The tango is a feeling that you dance,” says Bravo, “a story you tell in three minutes.  It’s passionate, it’s melancholic.  It’s tender, violent.  You dance it with somebody – but it is so internal, you dance it by yourself.  More than just a dance, the tango is music, a drama, a culture, a way of life.”

FOREVER TANGO tells the story of the birth of the tango in 19th century Argentina where thousands of men, having abandoned a disintegrating Europe to emigrate to South America, found themselves in the crowded abattoirs (packing houses), the bars and street corners of the arrabales (outlying barrios) and in the enramadas (brothels).  The tango was born of this lonely and violent existence.  Originally shunned by Argentina society as indecent, the tango became an overnight craze in upper-class Paris when Argentine intellectuals taught it when traveling abroad.  The tango quickly spread across Europe and to America, and was eventually re-imported home to Argentina society, though not unchanged.  Born in the brothels and bordellos of Buenos Aires, the tango may be Argentina’s best known export.

Creator/director of FOREVER TANGO, Luis Bravo is a world-class cellist who has performed with major symphonies throughout the world.  His distinguished credits include appearances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Colon Theatre Opera House, the Buenos Aires Philharmonic and other prestigious ensembles.

FOREVER TANGO’s design team includes Argemira Affonso (Costumes), Luis Bravo (Lighting), Mike Miller (Sound), and Jean-Luc Don Vito (Make-up).  Víctor Lavallén serves as Musical Director/Arranger and composed some of the music in the show.

FOREVER TANGO opened on Broadway June of 1997 for what was expected to be an eight-week engagement, ran for 14 months and has since been back to New York on Broadway on two separate occasions.  The New York Times called FOREVER TANGO, “A must-see!”  And USA Today said, “Forever Tango shows that the style is more than steamy – it’s smart, even funny … a sensuous, seductive, pleasure.”  The New York Daily News raved that the show was, “an evening of sheer pleasure!  Sensual, elegant, dazzling!”  And the Associated Press declared it to be, “the most theatrical show on Broadway!”  These sizzling reviews and huge demand for tickets forced the run to be extended again and again

The Beriozka Ballet

The BERIOZKA was founded by Nadezhda Nadezhdina in the spring of 1948.  This Russian Group of Popular Academic State Dances, BERIOZKA, has represented magnificently all of Russian folklore dance for more than 50 years.

​The BERIOZKA has been the Soviet cultural ambassador for more than 30 years and is considered the maximum representation of Russian popular dance.

Nadezhda Nadezhdina, the founder, has said: “Love the people, love popular art and see it with the eyes of a poet.” This has been the principal theme of Russian cultural “danzaria.”

BERIOZKA denotes: “Abedul,” the symbol of Russia. This autochthonous tree encompasses all the sublime and poetic values of popular art.

BERIOZKA’s trajectory has taken its art to the five continents, captivating all kinds of audiences.

The creative essence of BERIOZKA consists in synthesizing the folklore of popular dance with the school of classical dance. Furthermore, this amalgam of dances has permitted to communicate from the stage the ingenuous poetry, the intrinsic power, and beauty of popular Russian dance.

Twenty-five young and beautiful girls, dressed in long traditional Russian costumes, with saintly and illuminating aureola of impressive presence, walking, dancing and moving about the stage in such an imperceptible manner, make the BERIOZKA unique.

No, they do not walk or move, they “float,” but in such a way that one believes it is not they who move, but rather, it’s the stage under their feet, which is moving.

It is very difficult to describe with words the shades and colors that convey the undeniable character of BERIOZKA.  The performance is original, peerless, and unparalleled, as is the highly technical agility of the ballerinas, who dance with uncommon and unperceptive motion of soft expressions of femininity. Their uninterruptible spontaneity and the extraordinary harmony in their movements express the life that these artists have made of the Russian Group of Popular Academic State Dances, BERIOZKA. The world’s most exquisite, incomparable and inimitable folkloric ballet.

The Stanislavsky Ballet

The Ballet Company of the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theatre can trace its roots back to an infamous meeting held just over a century ago. In 1897, Konstantin Stanislavsky and Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko met at the Slavyansky Bazaar restaurant in Moscow for a lunch that began on June 22 and ended 18 hours later at the Stanislavsky family estate of Lyubimovka near the capital. Both visionaries shared a common goal: to create a modern performing arts centre within which they could merge their active organizations and ultimately meld their contacts of amateur performers and students. A year and four months later, they inaugurated the Moscow Art Theatre bringing together some of Russia’s finest artists. This year marks the 100th anniversary of this successful drama theatre.

Stanislavsky formed another centre in 1926, the Opera Studio, an offspring of the famous Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. There, he directed several operas, including Carmen, which were considered to be exemplar productions.

The Imperial Russian Ballet

The Imperial Russian Ballet was created in 1994 by Maija Plisetskaya, the Great Russian Ballerina.  The name was the idea of Gediminas Tarandá, the current director, who explains that “imperial, in this case, has nothing to do with the power of government; rather, it has more to do with the imperial style and majesty of the classical Russian Ballet dancers.

The company is made up of 45 top level artistic dancers who come from the major ballet companies of Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Perm, many of whom have been given prestigious awards in international competition.

In spite of being a newly formed company, they have been highly recognized by  many countries of the world, such as Japan, Finland, Austria, Germany, United States, Brazil, Portugal, Spain, etc.

Because of their success they were invited to celebrate the 70th Gala Anniversary of Maija Plisetskaya at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow.  She was quoted as saying: “the stars of this company are very good and I sincerely believe they are one of the best that has performed in Russia”.

Their repertory includes all the classical ballets: “Swan Lake”, “The Sleeping Beauty,” “Nutcracker,”  “Giselle,” “Carmen,” “Cinderella,” Coppelia,” “Don Quixote.”  They are able to interpret the following known Russian choreographers: M. Fokine, A. Gorsky, A. Goleisovsky, M. Petipá, N. Ogrysov, N. Androsov, and also have collaborated with British choreographers: A. Filipps and V. Rakitsky, and American choreographer, Lu Conte and the German choreographer, Kevin Heigen.

The Kiev Ballet

The Kiev Opera Ballet is celebrating its 143rd anniversary.  It was founded in 1867 based on the traditional classic Russian School of Ballet.  Ana Pavlova, Tamara Karsavina and Matilda Kesisnkaya were among some of its principal dancers, whose grace, expertise and professionalism influenced the Ukrainian school of classic ballet. Mijail Mardkin was the director of The Kiev Opera Ballet in 1919.  He was one of the greatest European choreographers who along with Bronislava, the sister of the famous soloist Vatslav Nijinski, founded the School of Choreography of Kiev.  Serge Lifar, the known choreographer, graduated from this school, then later immigrated to France, and became the Director of The Opera Ballet of Paris.

The well known schools of the Bolshoi and Kirov dominated the international panorama of classical ballet with stars of extraordinary expertise.  During this time the Ukrainian school was always spoken of with great respect and admiration, this was especially true of the principals and soloists of The Kiev Opera Ballet.  Now, because of the political and social changes that have occurred in the ex Soviet Union, the cultural and artistic strength of the Ukrainians has permitted them to integrate into the elite of the best European schools of ballet companies.

Regrettably, the United States has never witnessed the calibre and artistry of The Kiev Opera Ballet, who counts amongst it’s star principal dancers:  Tetyana Golyakova, Natalya Domracheva, Takita Shinobu, Ksenya Ivanenko, Victor Ishchuk y Maksym Chepyk, who are able to perform with remarkable precision, flawless purity and immaculate pageantry, the great ballet classics, such as: Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Carmen, Nutcracker, Don Quixote, Sulfide and others.

This is an excellent opportunity for ballet critics and the American public to delight and discover the stupendous Kiev Opera Ballet, who will leave their skillful talent in the hearts of the audience.
